Gut everything non-essential to the car’s running, replace heavy glass with plastic, and APPLY SPEED HOLES

All of this. I even want to remove bits of the bonnet frame and stuff like that. The car was almost scrap when I bought it so may as well have some fun with it.

Why not a 2.8?

They came stock with a 2.5 so its a much easier swap, or so I’m told. Motor mounts are off the shelf and wiring diagrams for the exact car are available.

All the 6s are pretty similar as far as I know. The m52b28 came in them from 95-99 which is what mine has. I’ve also got the ZF 5 speed, so if you’ve got the Getrag that changes your options

The whole driveline would be going including gearbox and diff. The diff would explode trying to handle a 2.5 most likely.

Depends... I’ve heard that the small case (168mm) diffs can handle a decent amount of power depending on what you’re doing with it. 200 should be fine.

Or just find the entire driveline out of a later e36 to get the m52 (2.5 or 2.8), zf, and 188mm diff

I considered buying a 323i e46 as a donor, theyre dirt cheap here.

Why not 2.8? It’ll fit in the same space anyway. A guy in our car club did that and it’s mental. Stripped interior and everything

Im starting to be more and more convinced by the 2.8 now haha. Plan as stands. Engine + driveline changes as needed, half cage, stripped, brakes and suspension.

Surprisingly enough the 4cyl drivetrain w/6  will hold up well. He added e36 brakes and BC coilovers/swaybars.

Interesting. If the diff would survive the i6 itd make the swap really quite cheap.
